Less than a month after leading Scottsdale Chaparral's softball team to the Class 4A Division I championship game, coach Brad Goddes has announced his resignation to devote more time to his family.

Goddes had a 53-17 record in two seasons, including a 26-0 mark in Desert Sky Region play. Chaparral fell 1-0 in eight innings to Tucson Canyon del Oro in the title game that featured a brilliant pitching duel between Chaparral's Mackenzie Popescue and Canyon del Oro's Kenzie Fowler.

"Running a successful program takes a lot of time, including things beyond the field. During the season, it's like having another full-time job. I just wanted more time with my family," said Goddes, who will continue to teach human anatomy at Chaparral.

"It will be tough not working with the players. I enjoyed my time on the field with them. They put in a lot of hard work and did a great job."

One of the early candidates to lead the program is Wes Little, who served as an assistant for Goddes the past two seasons.

Goddes is the second softball coach to resign after leading his team to a 2007 title game.

Sierra Vista Buena's Mike Tomooka also stepped down shortly after a 2-0, eight-inning loss to Phoenix St. Mary's in Class 5A Division I.
